Portfolio Audit
How we keep ourselves accountable.
To ensure maximum transparency and accountability, every Terrapass offset purchase is verified in a periodic review conducted by an independent and accredited third party. We were the first carbon offset provider in the U.S. to undergo such a review of our carbon purchase and supply.
The review covers several aspects of our business:
Offset quantity: Did we actually source the necessary amount of carbon offsets on behalf of our customers? To ensure that we did, the accountant examines and verifies our retail sales records and offset supply contracts.
Offset quality: Did we adhere to the quality benchmarks that we say we support? The accountant examines our carbon offset portfolio to ensure that it meets our stated standards.
Transparency and Verification: Our published project portfolio list is part of our submittals to the independent accountant. We publish details on the full portfolio for each period once it has been verified by our accountant.
Each year Terrapass retires the offsets it sold during the previous year. The time lag between sale and retirement occurs because of the process required to have third parties verify the exact amount of offsets generated and retired on behalf of our customers. Each year we compile a list of every sale, check it in detail (and have our outside accountants check it in detail as well), and add up all the numbers to make sure that everything aligns.

2009-2010 Project Portfolio
Status: verified
The projects listed below detail our final portfolio for customers who purchased offsets from the main Terrapass portfolio between January 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. The listing is verified.
Independent Carbon Portfolio Review
Terrapass’ retail sales and retirements of carbon offsets were independently reviewed by SingerLewak, a top 100 accounting services firm (out of over 150,000 nationally) headquartered in Los Angeles, CA.
Terrapass’ carbon portfolio for the period of January 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010 saw several changes from previous years. In addition to offsets from wind power, agricultural methane capture, and landfill gas capture, we added a new project type: methane capture from an abandoned coal mine. Meanwhile, changes in the market impacted the supply of offsets from agricultural methane capture projects, thus resulting in a smaller percentage of such offsets in our portfolio than in previous years.
All projects meet our high standards for inclusion in the portfolio. In addition, we carried forward into this timeframe our final remaining offsets issued under the Chicago Climate Exchange program (CCX) so that they could be retired to honor specific requests from customers. These offsets were not part of the general portfolio used to satisfy our individual and business sales.
The projects listed below detail the final portfolio for retail customers who purchased offsets between January 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. See SingerLewak’s report for full details.

2006 Project Portfolio
Status: verified
Total metric tons CO2: 220,426,931
Terrapass’ 2006 emission reduction obligations were fulfilled from a portfolio of two-thirds greenhouse gas reductions from landfill gas capture and farm power; and one-third clean energy from wind power and landfill power. All projects met our quality criteria: independent verification, ongoing monitoring, and matched maturity. Terrapasses purchased in 2006 were fulfilled with reductions of vintage 2006. All clean energy projects & renewable energy credits were Green-e certified, and all other projects were conducted and verified according to the rules of the Chicago Climate Exchange. All projects in this portfolio are listed below.

2004-2005 Project Portfolio
Status: verified
Total metric tons CO2: 14,694
CRS verified Terrapass’ total sales were 1,074 CO2-e tons in 2004 and 13,620 CO2-e tons in 2005, and that these sales were supplied with one-third Green-e RECs and two-thirds Chicago Climate Exchange carbon offsets. All projects met our quality criteria: independent verification, ongoing monitoring, and reductions which occurred consistent with the timeframe of our external auditing cycle (in this case, late 2004 through 2005).
