Carbon Offsets Are Going Mainstream

Chances are, you’ve read Parade Magazine. Distributed for free with over 370 Sunday newspapers, Parade is the most widely read magazine in the United States. Although it may not be your first source of news, you’re probably guilty of occasionally thumbing over to Marilyn vos Savant’s column to watch as the person with the world’s highest recorded IQ trains her limitless intellect on simple word puzzles.

In the present issue, Parade has published a list of 25 things you can do to combat global warming (the print edition has a shorter version of the article with only five tips). It’s a solid list, although I would have put political action higher and made some mention of reducing air travel.

Erasing your carbon footprint comes in at number 24. Terrapass rates a mention, but far more interesting and exciting is the fact that millions more Americans have now at least been introduced to the term “carbon footprint” and the notion of balancing it out. We’ve long believed that carbon balancing will become a mainstream consumer phenomenon in the same way that recycling now is, and the article in Parade is a further step toward creating a new cultural norm.
