About This Project

  • The Rimba Raya project is located in uninhabited lowland peat swamp forest in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. The project plays a role in preserving this region, which is threatened by deforestation and agricultural expansion, particularly for palm oil plantations.
  • Rimba Raya provides a buffer zone between the palm oil industry and Tanjung Puting National Park, which is home to one of the last remaining wild populations of orangutans. By safeguarding this area, the project helps protect this species and other wildlife that rely on the forest.
  • The project contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by preventing deforestation. Forest clearing for agricultural use, especially for palm oil plantations, is often done through fire, leading to carbon emissions. By halting deforestation, Rimba Raya prevents these emissions and helps mitigate climate change.
  • The region is rich in biodiversity, which was at risk when the provincial government planned to convert the area into four palm oil estates. By protecting this habitat, the project ensures the survival of numerous species.
  • Rimba Raya also implements livelihood programs in surrounding villages, providing education and employment opportunities that help improve the quality of life for local communities while promoting conservation efforts.

Sustainability Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 interconnected goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. The SDGs build upon the earlier Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) but are broader in scope, encompassing a wide range of economic, social, and environmental issues. They provide a comprehensive framework for addressing global challenges and achieving a more sustainable and equitable world. This project has the following sustainability development goals that are displayed.
